'Nutation' explores the themes of the hidden and the visible and the paradoxical relationship between real and photographic space. Whilst confronting the viewer with an image that at first glance seems profoundly dimensional, the observer is aware of the photographic surface. The metalic sea retreats into 'the void' leaving the detail of the waves and tide as little more than textured patterns on the picture plane. As in the earlier 'Precession' series Whites strategy of image making is one that owes as much to Friedrich, Turner, Rothko and Richter as to photography. He returns again to the sea as his primary subject matter.
'Sea is mystery, a vast area of unexplored, uncharted territory, a place that remains unaltered through time where the true nature of our planet is exposed’.
